Airside is a technical term which indicates an area of an airport where access is restricted. These specific areas would be: taxiways, aprons and runways. They also include the restricted zones past the security gates in the terminal buildings.
If, for any reason, you are required to go airside for your job, you might be obliged, by the legalities of the airport, to have specific liability cover, in the possibility, or even likelihood, of third party injury you cause to property not your
, target: "_blank"own.
Public liability policies do not cover high risk locations - airports and aerodromes, for instance.
Sometimes an insurer will provide liability cover for these high risk situations; however, there will be an extra premium. In this case, the indemnity limit will also, most likely, not exceed 5 mill GBP.
Public liability cover for these companies and individuals working in airside areas would obviously also have to be higher, due to increased risk factors. For these personnel, a separate policy would be necessary: either in the form of extra
cover, additional to an existing policy, or as the primary cover. The risk factors are so high, that indemnity limits often exceed 50 million GBP.
There are a large number of airports which make it obligatory for contractors to take out independent airside liability cover. Sometimes the required limits have been raised.
If you are no protected by this cover, not only can you not do business airside, but neither will your company enjoy protection in this potentially fatal working environment.
The landside area is accesible to the general public, including those not travelling. It includes check-in and ticketing desks and is not considered a "secure" area in the same sense as the airside area.
Put simply, an indemnity limit is the maximum amount that an insurer will pay out for any one claim and usually within any one policy year (assuming a yearly insurance policy).
